Material Stories

2020

BRIEF

This module was ran by Ian Hunter, CEO of Materials Council. We were asked to create a scheme from a choice of three words that would direct our material choices. My choice of words were: Feminine, Natural, Permanence.

We were asked to design a space catering to a particular sector. I proposed an Aesop Store.

The driver of the module was a focus on embodied carbon and how emissions can be cut through design moves and creative problem solving. My final proposal had a total of 822 kgCO2/kg -  reducing the emissions by 90% from the first proposal.

Part of my scheme utilised the benefits of rammed earth. I wanted to know the processes behind this material better, so made my own brick.
